Waste copper wire includes pure copper and alloy copper (brass / bronze, containing copper), and its forms include bare copper wire (for communication cable cores, motor windings), coated copper wire (for electronic component pins), and insulated waste wires. Red copper wire, due to its high conductivity, mostly comes from obsolete cables; brass wire contains zinc and is commonly found in used hardware, decorative items. Sorting requires distinguishing the materials to ensure the recycling value.

Bare copper wire:  Directly smelted to produce high-purity copper, used in electronic and power industries;
Mixed wire:  Through the "crushing + air separation" process of a copper mill, separates copper from plastic, suitable for wire recycling plants;
Plated copper wire:  Through chemical stripping or fire method for impurity removal, reverts to pure copper, mostly used for the reprocessing of slightly lower-purity brass.

Recycling one ton of scrap copper wire can save 150 tons of copper ore, reduce water and electricity consumption by 80%, and reduce CO2 emissions by 3 tons. In the market, scrap copper due to its high copper content has a premium price, while scrap brass is priced based on the copper content ratio. It becomes a "cost buffer" for smelting plants, alleviating resource shortages and aligning with the goal of carbon neutrality.

According to the classification by copper content, impurity rate and oxidation degree, the sorting is standardized: bare wires should be free of coating / residual insulation, and mixed wires should indicate the proportion of copper and plastic. Standardized recycling ensures the downstream smelting process, achieving a high yield rate of products, avoiding the brittleness and reduced conductivity of copper ingots due to impurities (such as plastic, coated metals), and promoting efficient circulation of the recycling industry chain.
